Cairns on a Budget: 15 Free and Cheap Things to Do

Cairns on a budget is easier than it looks. The best parts of the city centre are free: the lifeguarded Esplanade Lagoon, the waterfront boardwalk, council fitness classes, free electric barbecues, the Cairns Art Gallery and the Botanic Gardens. Add markets you can browse for nothing and 50-cent local buses (as of October 2026), and the reef trip can be the only big spend of your stay.

Here are 15 free and cheap things to do in the Cairns CBD, most of them within walking distance of Hides Hotel on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets.

What can you do in Cairns for free?

1. Swim in the Esplanade Lagoon

The big saltwater Lagoon on the Esplanade is free, lifeguarded and open all year, and it’s under 5 minutes’ walk from our front door. It’s open from early morning into the evening most days, but closes on Wednesday mornings for cleaning (as of October 2026). Check the Cairns Regional Council Esplanade page before you go.

2. Walk or cycle the Esplanade boardwalk

The boardwalk runs for a couple of kilometres along the waterfront, past the Lagoon, playgrounds, outdoor gym equipment and the mudflats, where you’ll often spot shorebirds at low tide. Go early for cooler air or late for the sunset over the mountains.

3. Join a free fitness class

Council’s Active Living program runs free classes along the Esplanade and in Fogarty Park, usually early in the morning: think yoga, Pilates and beach volleyball. The timetable changes through the year, so check the Active Living page for this week’s sessions. Bring water and a towel.

4. Cook on a free Esplanade barbecue

The electric barbecues along the Esplanade are free to use. Pick up sausages, bread and salad, find a shady spot near the water and you’ve got dinner with a view for the price of the groceries. Please clean the plate when you’re done.

5. Let the kids loose at Muddy’s Playground

Muddy’s, further along the Esplanade, has water play, climbing and shade, and it costs nothing. Council lists it as open daily, with some sections closed on certain mornings for maintenance.

6. See the Cairns Art Gallery

Entry is free (donations welcome), and the collection has a strong focus on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander art. The main building is on the corner of Abbott and Shields Streets, a couple of blocks down Shields Street from Hides. As of October 2026 it’s open daily, with shorter hours on Sundays: see the gallery’s visit page. It’s also a cool, dry escape on a hot or rainy afternoon.

7. Follow the public art around the city

Some of the city’s best art is outdoors. Look for sculptures and murals along the Esplanade, Shields Street and around Munro Martin Parklands. It’s a good free wander when you’ve got an hour to fill.

8. Wander the Cairns Botanic Gardens

Flecker Garden and the conservatory in Edge Hill are free and open daily, 7:30am to 5:30pm, weather permitting (as of October 2026, per council). The Friends of the Botanic Gardens often run free guided walks, so check council’s tours and walks page. It’s a short drive from the city, or a cheap bus ride.

9. Climb the Red Arrow track

Right next to the gardens, the Red Arrow circuit on Mount Whitfield is a short, steep rainforest loop with views over the city and the Coral Sea. Wear proper shoes, carry water and start early in the hotter months.

10. Watch the sunset on the waterfront

Walk to the marina end of the Esplanade near dusk and watch the boats come back in from the reef. It costs nothing and it’s one of the best views in town.

Which Cairns markets are free to visit?

11. Rusty’s Markets

Rusty’s is right across the road from Hides. It’s free to wander, and it’s the cheapest way to stock up on tropical fruit, coffee and lunch. As of October 2026 it trades Friday to Sunday from 5am (until 6pm Friday and Saturday, 3pm Sunday). Go early for the best produce.

12. The Esplanade Markets

On Saturdays, the Esplanade usually hosts a market of local makers, with jewellery, woodwork, art and snacks. Browsing is free. Check the council’s events page for the day’s details.

13. Cairns Night Markets

Open every evening, the Night Markets near the Esplanade are a short walk from the hotel. Browse the souvenir stalls for free, then grab an inexpensive dinner from the food court.

How do you get around Cairns cheaply?

14. Walk, or take the 50-cent bus

From the CBD you can walk to the Lagoon, Esplanade, Night Markets, Art Gallery and Reef Fleet Terminal. For anything further, Translink regional buses in Cairns cost a flat 50 cents a trip (as of October 2026, per Translink). That makes the Botanic Gardens or the northern beaches an easy, cheap half-day. Stinger season usually runs from November to May, so swim only at patrolled beaches inside the nets, or stick to the Lagoon.

15. Eat cheaply in the city

Rusty’s food stalls, the Night Markets food court and an Esplanade barbecue picnic will keep your food costs low. For sit-down options near the hotel, see our dining guide to eating near Hides Hotel.

Is Cairns expensive to visit?

It doesn’t have to be. For most visitors the big cost is the reef or rainforest trip. Day-to-day, the free waterfront, gardens, gallery and markets mean you can fill several days for very little. Our reception and tour desk can book reef trips, day tours and attractions, so you can compare options in one place. The Reef Fleet Terminal, where most reef boats leave, is under 10 minutes’ walk from Hides.

Where should you stay in Cairns on a budget?

Stay central and you’ll spend less getting around: no taxis to the Lagoon, the markets or the reef boats. Hides Hotel is a heritage-listed hotel in the middle of the CBD, with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, a lift, a guest laundry and storage lockers for early arrivals and late departures.
