What’s on in Cairns this February 2026
February in Cairns is classic Wet Season: warm days, big skies, and the occasional “that escalated quickly” rain shower. The good news is the city makes it easy to keep plans flexible with markets, live shows and Esplanade evenings all within easy reach of the CBD. If you’re staying at Hides Hotel, you’re well placed to duck out, duck back, and still call it a full day.
Chinese New Year celebrations in Cairns
Cairns’ Chinese New Year program runs from 13 February to 8 March 2026, with events and activations centred around the Cairns Esplanade. Expect lanterns, cultural performances, market-style stalls and plenty of atmosphere along the waterfront.
Local tip: Go early evening for the vibe, then wander back to the CBD when you’ve had your fill of crowds (and/or dumplings).

Markets and easy wins
Rusty’s Markets
Rusty’s is a Cairns institution for tropical fruit, fresh produce and quick bites. It’s the kind of place where you arrive “just to look” and leave with a mango the size of a small football.
- Friday–Saturday: 5:00am–6:00pm
- Sunday: 5:00am–3:00pm
Cairns Night Markets
Perfect for an easy dinner-and-wander in the city. Stalls typically open from late afternoon, and there’s a food court for simple, no-fuss feeds.
Esplanade Markets
A popular Saturday option near the Lagoon with local makers and handmade bits and pieces. Great for gifts, or “souvenirs” you totally bought for someone else.
Wet season reality check
February sits within Australia’s official tropical cyclone season (1 November to 30 April), so it’s smart to keep an eye on the forecast and build a flexible itinerary. The upside is you can plan around it easily in Cairns: shows, markets and the Esplanade are close together and easy to pivot between.
