Things to Do in Cairns December 2026: Christmas, New Year’s Eve & Summer

December in Cairns means Christmas lights on the Esplanade, the start of the summer school holidays, a New Year’s Eve Taipans game and fireworks over the water. It’s hot (around 31°C) and the wet season is starting, so plan for afternoon storms and swim in the Esplanade Lagoon rather than the sea. Hides Hotel puts you right in the middle of it, on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets.

Why stay central at Hides this December?

Most of December’s free events happen within a few minutes’ walk of our front door: the Esplanade, Shields Street Plaza and the Lagoon. Staying in the CBD means no parking hunts on New Year’s Eve and an easy stroll home after the fireworks. Families heading north for the school holidays can spread out in our Family Room, which sleeps four, and everything you need to know about arriving is in our guest guide.

What’s on in Cairns in December 2026?

Here’s what’s planned or expected, as of October 2026. Council usually publishes its full festive program in November, so check the Cairns Regional Council events page for confirmed 2026 dates and times.

Christmas in the city

Council’s Christmas program runs across the CBD through December. Last year (2025) it included the giant Christmas tree light-up at Lagoon Plaza on the Esplanade, twilight Christmas markets on Shields Street Plaza (right on our corner), “Let It Snow” snow shows on the Lagoon Plaza lawn and Carols in the Park at Munro Martin Parklands. Expect a similar line-up in 2026; check council’s page for this year’s dates.

Cairns 150 wraps up

2026 is Cairns’ 150th anniversary year, with more than 80 events through the year, and the celebrations run through to 31 December. Keep an eye on council’s Cairns 150 program for the final events of the year.

Cairns Taipans at home

The NBL’s Cairns Taipans play at the Cairns Convention Centre, within walking distance of the hotel. As of October 2026, December home games include Sunday 20 December v Perth Wildcats (4:00pm) and a New Year’s Eve game v NZ Breakers on Thursday 31 December (6:30pm). Check the full fixture and tickets at taipans.com.

New Year’s Eve on the Esplanade

Cairns usually sees in the new year on the Esplanade. Last year’s free family event ran from 5:00pm to 9:30pm on the Western Events Lawn, with fireworks at 8:30pm and midnight. Council confirms the 2026 program closer to the date, and events can be called off in strong winds or lightning, so check on the day.

School holidays begin

Queensland’s summer school holidays run from Saturday 12 December 2026 to Tuesday 26 January 2027, so Cairns gets busier from mid-December. Book early if your dates are fixed.

What’s the weather like in Cairns in December?

Hot and humid. Typical summer days are around 31°C, dropping to about 23°C overnight. December is when the wet season begins, so expect more rain than November and the odd afternoon thunderstorm. Pack light clothes, a hat, sunscreen and a rain jacket, and plan outdoor activities for the morning.

Can you swim in Cairns in December?

Yes, but choose where. December falls in marine stinger season, which generally runs from November to May. The free Esplanade Lagoon in the city is the easy option. If you head to the northern beaches, swim only at patrolled beaches inside the stinger nets, between the red and yellow flags, and wear a full-body stinger suit. On a reef trip, ask your operator about stinger suits before you go.
