Things to Do in Cairns January 2027: Summer Holidays, Storms & Safe Swimming

January in Cairns is peak summer: school holidays, Australia Day, NBL basketball and the wettest stretch of the year. Days sit around 31°C with heavy afternoon downpours, so mix outdoor mornings with indoor afternoons, and swim in the free Esplanade Lagoon rather than the sea. Hides Hotel, on the corner of Lake and Shields Streets, is a short walk from almost everything in this guide.

Why base yourself in the Cairns CBD in January?

When a storm rolls in, you want to be close to shelter, not stuck on a highway. From our front door, the Esplanade and Lagoon are under 5 minutes’ walk, Rusty’s Markets is across the road and the Reef Fleet Terminal is under 10 minutes away. Plenty of the best wet-weather options are in the city too. Families can spread out in our Family Room, which sleeps four, and everything you need to know about arriving is in our guest guide.

What’s on in Cairns in January 2027?

Here’s what’s planned or expected, as of October 2026. Council and venues usually confirm January programs in December, so check the Cairns Regional Council events page before you lock anything in.

Summer school holidays (to Tuesday 26 January)

Queensland’s summer school holidays run until Tuesday 26 January 2027, and Term 1 starts on Wednesday 27 January. Expect the city to be busy for most of the month, then quieter in the last week. Book early if your dates are fixed.

Australia Day: Tuesday 26 January

Australia Day is a public holiday. Council usually holds a free community celebration with the local Australia Day Awards. Last year (2026) it was “Great Australian Bites” at Munro Martin Parklands, with the awards followed by live entertainment and local food in the early evening. Check council’s site for the 2027 program, which is normally announced in January.

Cairns Taipans at the Cairns Convention Centre

The NBL season is in full swing in January, and the Taipans play home games at the Cairns Convention Centre, within walking distance of the hotel. As of October 2026, the club’s fixture includes a home game against the Tasmania JackJumpers in early January. Check dates, times and tickets at taipans.com.

Shows and live music

The Cairns Performing Arts Centre and the Tanks Arts Centre usually run summer shows, including family shows during the holidays. Programs are released progressively, so check their pages closer to your trip.

What’s the weather like in Cairns in January?

Hot, humid and wet. January days are typically around 31°C, with overnight lows around 24°C, and it’s one of the wettest months of the year. Rain often comes as heavy afternoon or evening storms rather than all-day drizzle, so mornings are usually your best window for outdoor plans.

January also falls in Queensland’s tropical cyclone season (November to April). Most trips are unaffected, but keep an eye on the Bureau of Meteorology forecast, and if a reef trip or day tour is cancelled for weather, talk to the operator about rebooking.

Can you swim in Cairns in January?

Yes, but pick your spot. January sits right in the middle of marine stinger season, which generally runs from November to May. Cairns city has no swimming beach (the Esplanade foreshore is mudflats), so most visitors swim at the free, lifeguarded Esplanade Lagoon. It’s open every day, except that it opens later on Wednesdays for cleaning, so check council’s page for current hours.

If you head to the northern beaches, swim only at patrolled beaches inside the stinger nets, between the red and yellow flags, and wear a full-body stinger suit. On a reef trip, operators usually provide stinger suits; ask before you go.

What can you do in Cairns when it rains?

A downpour doesn’t have to wreck the day. Indoor options in the city include:

  • Cairns Aquarium: reef, rainforest and river habitats under one roof, with tunnel views of sharks and rays.
  • Cairns Museum: the city’s history, in the old School of Arts building.
  • A show or a film: CPAC, the Tanks Arts Centre and the cinemas at Cairns Central are all in town.
  • Long lunches: the CBD is packed with cafés and restaurants. Our Cairns dining guide has ideas within walking distance.

Some people time their rainforest trips for the wet on purpose: the waterfalls are at their fullest in summer. If you’re driving, check road conditions first, because creeks and causeways can flood after heavy rain.

  • The Great Barrier Reef: day trips leave from the Reef Fleet Terminal, under 10 minutes’ walk away. Go early in your stay so you have spare days if the weather turns. Our reception and tour desk can help you book reef trips and day tours.
  • Cairns Night Markets: open every evening and easy for a cheap dinner and a wander, a short walk from the hotel.
  • The Esplanade: free electric barbecues, playgrounds and a boardwalk along the water. Go early or late to beat the heat.
  • Kuranda: head up to the rainforest village on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway or the Kuranda Scenic Railway.
